Michael Curtis Green founded The Chair Workshop in 1997, building on his passion for sofas and chairs. He had previously spent seven years leading a nomadic existence as a boat builder.

Michael comes from a creative background. His great grandfather, William Curtis Green, was a well known architect who, amongst other things, designed the Dorchester Hotel. William’s brother, Romney, was one of the leading Arts and Crafts furniture designers and exhibitors at the beginning of the last century.

Michael originally began a service encompassing detailed restoration of upholstered antique pieces and recovering sofas and chairs. In 1999 a customer asked Michael to design some bespoke seating for her new house. The Mariners’ Collection, the foundation of Curtis Green, was born and has been growing ever since.
